I had the entire drive back to the apartment to stew on what had just happened, what was still happening to me. I didn’t trust Wallace or Mr. White, and for all I knew, I was getting driven out into the desert to a shallow grave and a .357 magnum to the back of the skull. That didn’t happen though. When the SUV finally stopped the only thing that happened was Wallace gruffly telling me to get out.

I pulled off the hood and looked out the window at the front of my apartment building.

“Take your things with you.” He said.

I looked at the seat next to me. The female agent, in all her pleasant demeanor and charm, was sitting there and in-between us were my bags. I opened the door all the way. If they were going to snuff me out, they were going to have to do it in broad daylight. I grabbed my bags and got one foot on the ground before turning back.

“It’s been a pleasure, really. Let’s not do it again though. Wallace, I’m worried that your girlfriend back here has a crush on me. I don’t want to make things awkward between us. Bros before hoes you know. I just really feel like she’ll drive a wedge between us.”

No one looked amused. My work was done. I stepped back and left the door open. Wallace could get out and close it himself. There’s no limit to my pettiness.

Wallace had his window down and leaned out. “Stay away from Sanctuary and this investigation. If I see you again, I'll take you down.”

I smiled and tried to look as innocent as possible, which granted, isn’t very innocent.

“Wallace, I would never, ever, ever insert myself into an FBI investigation. It would just be plain rude and clearly a violation of your trust.”

He stared at me stone-faced. Standard issue for government hard asses I believe.

He rolled up the window. The lady agent moved across the seat, looked me up and down like she was considering stabbing me, and closed the door. I smacked the roof of the SUV twice as if I was telling them they were good to leave. The best part was they drove off and left me there, alive, breathing, and with zero bullet holes. Not an utterly terrible day in the grand scheme of things.

I did a quick scan of the street. I couldn’t see any nondescript government issue surveillance vans or any cars that looked out of place.

I made it all the way to the apartment and locked the door behind me before I lost it. My heart was hammering, and I felt like I could hardly breathe. I’d been way too damn close to never seeing the sun again. I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes, just breathing. Sweet, sweet free air, well as free as you can be when you have the government breathing down your neck, the Venatori lurking around somewhere in the city, and a pack of Vampires that’s been murdering its way across the country all surrounding you.
